Bengals Battle in 4-3 Loss to Montana State

POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women's tennis team fell 4-3 to visiting Montana State Sunday afternoon at Reed Gym. The match was a battle to the final match point as four singles matches went to three sets with the final coming down to a 10-8 tiebreaker.

"It was a tough loss today," Head Coach Gretchen Maloney said. "We won the doubles point early and thought we could use some of that momentum in singles. Montana State had a little more fight in singles play than we did."

In doubles play, Montana State claimed the first win as MSU's Laura Middel and Naomi Holopainen bested senior Wiebke Boeckmann and freshman Nonie Alexandersen at the No. 1 doubles position. The Bengals evened things up following senior Taylor Cole and senior Laura Gutierrez's 6-4 win over Shelby Cerkovnik and Wanda Holopainen at the No. 3 doubles position. ISU broke the 1-1 tie in doubles play and claimed the doubles point with a 6-4 win following a battle between seniors Laura Theus and Svenja Tegtmeier and MSU's Jessica Brycki and Angelina Philippova at the No. 2 doubles position.

In singles play, the Bengals battled the Bobcats, sending four singles matches to a third set. However, Montana State bested ISU in singles play, claiming four wins to offset ISU's doubles point victory to defeat the Bengals 4-3.

Idaho State is back in action April 1 against league-leading Northern Arizona at 12 p.m. at Reed Gym.
