Women's Tennis Falls to Northern Arizona 4-3

POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women's tennis team fell to visiting Northern Arizona 4-3 Friday afternoon at Reed Gym. The Bengals split singles play 3-3 with the Lumberjacks but were swept in doubles play to give NAU the 4-3 match win.

"It was another nail biter today," Head Coach Gretchen Maloney said. "We had our chances to day in singles and doubles but couldn't capitalize. We can play with anyone, and the girls have improved so much this season."

NAU (13-7, 7-1 BSC) claimed the early doubles point after defeating the Bengals (6-9, 2-4 BSC) 6-4 at the No. 3 doubles position and 6-3 at the No. 2 position. Freshman Nonie Alexandersen and senior Wiebke Boeckmann had a 5-4 edge on Blanka Szavay and Hanneke Lodewijks at the No. 1 doubles position, but given NAU's 2-0 advantage following wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions the pair were unable to finish the match.

In singles play, Alexandersen defeated NAU's Hailey Rochin 7-5, 6-0 to tie the match 1-1, but the Lumberjacks countered with a win at the No. 2 singles position as senior Svenja Tegtmeier fell to Szavay 7-6, 6-1. The Bengals once again evened the match up at 2-all with a win at the No. 3 position as Boeckmann bested Marta Lewandowska 7-5, 7-5 and senior Kasey Bacon followed suit with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 win over Lodewijks at the No. 1 singles position to give ISU the 3-2 advantage.

However, the final two matches went to the Lumberjacks as ISU dropped both the Nos. 5 and 6 singles matches to give NAU the 4-3 win.

Idaho State is back in action April 9 against Air Force at 10 a.m. at Reed Gym.
