POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to visiting Wyoming Tuesday evening at Davis Field.
"I think we took a step backwards today," Head Coach
Allison Gibson said. "Unfortunately our legs caught up with us. We are asking them to do a lot, and unfortunately we did not answer the call today."
Although Idaho State (1-2-0) was nearly equal to Wyoming (2-0-0) in almost every statistical category, the Cowgirls boasted a 9-2 advantage on corner kicks, an advantage that proved to be crucial down the stretch. Both of Wyoming's goals came off corner kicks, with one coming in the first half and the other just 10 minutes into the second.
In the first half, both teams shared possession almost equally trading shot for shot. Wyoming earned a corner kick at the 34 minute mark, and the Cowgirls' Taylor Burton connected off the kick from Sammi Dunda for their first goal of the season. With the goal, ISU and Wyoming were dead even with seven shots each. Both squads would fire off three more shots each neither was able to score, giving the Bengals a 1-0 deficit heading into the break.
In the second, the fatigue of playing three games in five days began to set in as Wyoming took control. The Cowgirls continually put the pressure on ISU's defense, resulting in five second-half corner kicks and nine shots, two of which were on goal. In the 55th minute, Wyoming's Annika Clayton connected on a free ball off a corner kick for a header that she placed just past ISU's goalkeeper
Shawna Hennings. The Bengals were unable to counter in the remaining 35 minutes, giving the Cowgirls the 2-0 win.
"We tried to fight through the fatigue of three games in five days, and we just weren't able to do it," Gibson said. "Plain and simple. We got in to sloppy soccer and got away from our game plan probably most of all."
The Bengals again have a quick turnaround as they head to Honolulu, Hawaii to take on BYU-Hawaii Thursday, Aug. 25. The match is part of a two-game series hosted by Hawaii.
