POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women's basketball team returns home this week and welcomes league-leading Northern Colorado to the ICCU Court at Reed Gym Thursday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.
SCOUTING NORTHERN COLORADO
Northern Colorado is the hottest team in the Big Sky as the Bears are off to a perfect 6-0 start in conference play, the best start in Big Sky play since joining the conference in 2006, and carry a 14-3 overall record. Currently UNC is on a seven-game winning streak.
The Bears, picked to finish ninth in both the media and coaches polls, have yet to be significantly challenged in conference play. UNC has outscored its opponents by an average of 16 points per game with its closest score coming at Northern Arizona with a 69-66 victory on Jan. 7.
So far this season, UNC is averaging 70.2 points per game and 37.4 rebounds per game while shooting 42.2 percent from the floor. Three players averaged double figures for the Bears led by Savannah Smith at 14.4 points per game. Courtney Smith leads the squad in rebounding at 6.0 per game.
Northern Colorado is led by Head Coach Kami Ethridge who is in her third season at the helm of the program.
SERIES REVIEW
Idaho State leads the series 17-6 and has won three of the last five meetings. Last season Northern Colorado swept the Bengals during the regular season, but ISU handled UNC in the first round of the Big Sky Conference tournament in Reno, Nev. for a 54-45 win to advance to the quarterfinals.
BENGAL BITES
- Idaho State's perfect 6-0 home record is on the line this week. In six home games so far this season, the Bengals have averaged 66.0 points per game and 42.2 rebounds, as compared with 54.4 points and 41.4 rebounds in road and neutral site games. The Bengals have also fared better shooting-wise at home, shooting 41.1 percent in Pocatello as opposed to 32.9 percent on the road or in neutral site games.
- The Bengals are back on the winning track with a convincing 67-60 win at Idaho on Jan. 14. Without their leading scorer and rebounder Grace Kenyon, the Bengals put together their third-highest scoring effort and recorded at least 40 rebounds for the 11th time this season.
- 60 seems to be the magic number. So far this season, the Bengals are 6-0 when scoring 60 to 69 points. ISU netted 67 on Saturday, Jan. 14 at Idaho and earned its sixth win of the season when scoring between 60 and 69 points.
