POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State men's tennis earned its first win of the spring season Friday afternoon with a convincing 6-1 victory over visiting Southern Utah. The Bengals earned the doubles points and won five-of-six singles matches to run away with their first win of the new year.
"It was a solid performance all the way around," Head Coach
Mark Rodel said. "Southern Utah is a much improved team from last season, and I was pleased with the way we competed today."
Idaho State (1-2) started off hot with seniors
Sebastian Edin and
Josh Goodwin shutting out SUU's Ben Yeaker and Nico Schmidt 6-0 at the No. 1 doubles position. Bjorn Sheepbouwer and
Keegan Sullivan sealed the doubles point for ISU with a 6-3 win over Cedric Rupa and Sergio Palacio at the No. 3 doubles position.
"Josh and Sebastian continued with strong doubles play today and lead the way for our team," Rodel said. "That is going to be a real key to our success as a team this year is building on the doubles success."
In singles play, the Bengals had their strongest showing so far this season with five singles wins.
Quentin Wacquez, Edin, Goodwin, Scheebouwer and Sullivan all defeated their respective Southern Utah (0-1) opponents, and each did so in two sets.
"We had very solid performances today from one through six," Rodel said. "We did a great job of executing game plans, and we have just got to continue to build on that in order to reach the levels of success that I know this team is capable of."
Idaho State is back in action Sunday, Jan. 29 against visiting Arizona Christian. The match is set to begin at 9 a.m. at the tennis courts in Reed Gym.
