Softball Drops 2 at Fresno State Bulldog Classic; Burnett Sets ISU Hits Record

FRESNO, Calif.-
The Idaho State softball team dropped a pair of games in the second day of the Bulldog Classic on Saturday at Margie Wright Diamond. Cal Poly beat the Bengals 7-5 on Saturday afternoon then later in the evening Fresno State rallied to an 11-6 win.

Idaho State had 15 hits on the day, led by Haley Harrison's four hits and three RBIs. Kacie Burnett had three hits and became the ISU All-Time Hits leader. She now has 256 hits, passing Vicky Galasso's record of 253. Sarah Hayes also had three hits.

Ashlyn Ames and Mariah Mulcahy took the loses in the circle. Ames pitched four innings vs. Fresno State and allowed five hits, eight runs but only four earned. Mulcahy took the loss against Cal Poly and pitched the final two innings against Fresno State. Harley Wells started against the Mustangs and went four innings, allowing eight hits and four runs.

ISU committed 10 errors on the day with nine coming against Fresno State.

In the opener against Cal Poly, the Bengals trailed 4-0 after four innings.

The Bengals then scored five runs in the fifth on three hits to take a 5-4 lead. Frankie Tago started the scoring with a one-out single. After Ashley Breer and Hayes reached on a fielder's choice, Harrison hit her three-RBI triple. Emma Bordenkecher gave the Bengals the 5-4 lead on a two-out two-RBI single.

In the sixth inning, Cal Poly scored three runs on two hits and took advantage of one ISU miscue in the field to take the 7-5 lead.

In the nightcap, Idaho State scored four runs in the first inning on three hits and it took advantage of two Fresno State fielding errors to jump out to an early 4-0 lead.

Idaho State extended its lead to 6-0 in the top of the fourth thanks to a sacrifice fly by Ames and a run by Harrison, who reached base on a Fresno State error.

The lead didn't last long as ISU committed nine errors in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to allow Fresno State to take the 11-6 lead.

Idaho State closes play in the Bulldog Classic on Sunday at 10 a.m. mountain time vs. No. 12 Minnesota.
