PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Idaho State men's tennis team battled for a 4-3 victory at NAIA foe Arizona Christian Friday afternoon at the Phoenix Tennis Center in Phoenix, Ariz.
"We escaped today," Head Coach
Mark Rodel said. "We came out with low energy and perhaps discounted a very talented top 10 NAIA team. We were able to fight back after losing the doubles point with four singles wins. We will take this as a good learning opportunity; I am pleased to see our players rise to the occasion under pressure."
Arizona Christian (11-7) handled the Bengals in doubles play, wining 6-1 at No. 2 doubles and closing the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles. Idaho State (8-6) responded in singles play, winning four-of-six to take the match.
Sebastian Edin started things off with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 1 singles position, and
Josh Goodwin followed it up with a solid 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 3. ACU took the next match with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 6 singles position, but
Francis Filipovich got the Bengals back on the winning track with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4. ISU and ACU split the final two matches to give the Bengals a 4-3 edge on the match for the victory.
Idaho State continues play at home on March 31 with a 2 p.m. match against Portland State.
