POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State men's tennis team battled Portland State for a 4-3 win Friday afternoon at the tennis courts at Reed Gym.
"The team came out and played what I would say is their best doubles performance of the year," Head Coach
Mark Rodel said. "They executed flawlessly and came out with great energy and intensity to win the doubles point comfortably. That put us in a very good position for the rest of the match."
Idaho State (9-7, 4-3 BSC) dominated doubles play and swept Portland State (3-11, 1-6 BSC) for the doubles point.
Sebastian Edin and
Josh Goodwin started things off with 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles and
Quentin Wacquez and
Francis Filipovich clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.
"Portland State played very well to open singles play and won at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles to take a 3-2 lead in the match," Rodel said. "We were able to win at No. 4, 5 and 6 to split singles. The doubles point carried us through for the win."
Francis Filipovich,
Bjorn Scheepbouwer and
Keegan Sullivan all picked up wins for ISU in singles play. Filipovich posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles, Scheepbouwer bested Yousef Abdo 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 and Sullivan clinched the win for ISU with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6.
Idaho State continues play Sunday, April 2 against North Dakota at 9 a.m. at the Tennis Courts at Reed Gym.
