Bengals Drop DH at SUU

 
POCATELLO, Idaho-
The Idaho State softball team dropped a double header to Southern Utah on Friday afternoon in Cedar City, losing 9-8 and 12-7.

The Bengals tallied 21 hits on the day and Kacie Burnett and Emma Bordenkecher each hit home runs. Haley Harrison and Bordenkecher each had four hits while Sarah Hayes had three.

Ashlyn Ames took the loss in the circle in game 1, pitching 6.1 innings, striking out four, walking four and allowing nine hits. Mariah Mulcahy took the loss in game 2. She went 3.1 innings, allowed eight runs, five hits and four walks. Harley Wells pitched the final 2.2 innings and allowed nine hits and four runs.

"It is so disappointing to have the lead in both games and not be able to mentally compete and finish," Idaho State coach Candi Letts said. "We have to get game 3 to stay in the hunt."

In the first game of the day, the Bengals scored their eight runs on nine hits and had two errors in the field while SUU had nine runs on nine hits and one error.

ISU jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first inning and extended the margin to 7-1 after two.

In the first inning, Hayes led off with a walk and Alex Portesi then reached base on an error. Burnett walked to load the bases and Ames drove in the first run on a single to right field. Aubrey Creekmore followed with a two-RBI single up the middle to up the lead to 3-0. Later in the inning with one out, Shayna Dahlen drove home Ames on a sacrifice fly and then Kelsey Breer singled home Creekmore. Harrison would score the final run of the inning.

Ames platted the second inning run on a double to right-center. SUU then scored five runs in the third inning to cut the Idaho State lead to 7-6. ISU led 8-6 after the top of the fifth thanks to a RBI triple by Bordenkecher.

The T-Birds then scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and tied it at eight in the sixth inning, SUU won the game on a walk off homer in the bottom of the seventh.

Ames was 2-4 with two RBIs and Creekmore was 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

In game 2, the scored was knotted at zero through three innings. Bordenkecher hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning to give the Bengals 2-0 lead. SUU then scored nine runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 9-2 lead.

ISU added two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth innings but SUU scored two in the fifth inning and one in the sixth to keep ISU at bay.

The Bengals had 12 hits while SUU finished with 14.

The series concludes at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
