POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State men's tennis team fell at Utah State 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the Sports Academy and Raquet Club in Logan, Utah.
"Utah State is a Top 50 team in the country, and they proved it to us today," Head Coach
Mark Rodel said. "We unfortunately had to play one player short, so we were a little short on the lineup."
In doubles play,
David Felix and
Francis Filipovich teamed up to defeat Utah State's Samuel Serrano and Sergiu Bucur 6-4, but the Bengals'
Peter Trhac and
Keegan Sullivan were bested 6-4 by USU's Valdemar Holm and Andrew Nakajima. Since ISU was competing short a player, it could only field two doubles teams, giving Utah State the final doubles win and the doubles point.
"The guys came out and we played really high quality doubles, and I thought everyone has bought into the game style and the game strategy that we employ," Rodel said. "They played with conviction which saw David and Francis take out a 6-4 win."
In singles play, all six matches were won in two sets by USU.
"As singles go, I was overall disappointed as a whole," Rodel said. "We need to regroup, and we know what we need to work on. We need to play with a little bit more conviction and discipline, and improve. We are looking forward to traveling to Utah next week and playing them, another quality opponent, and then getting ready for conference season to start. Overall, I'm optimistic but disappointed in the overall performance as a whole."
The Bengals continue play on the road next week as they travel to face Utah on Jan. 21 at 5 p.m.
