LOGAN, Utah – The Idaho State women's tennis team battled Utah State Friday morning at the Sports Academy & Raquet Club, winning the doubles point before falling 4-3 to the Aggies.
Idaho State (0-1) opened doubles play with a 6-4 loss at the No. 1 doubles position as USU's Sasha Pisareva and Sabrina Demerath bested
Huibre-Mare Botes and
Louise-Mare Botes. Yet the Bengals rebounded as
Melissa Coburn and
Madison Fenske battled the Aggies' Jenna Kane and Sophia Haleas at the No. 3 position for the 7-5 win. The Bengals'
Hristina Cvetkovic and
Megan Poe earned the 7-6 (7-5) tiebreaker win at the No. 2 doubles position to earn the doubles point for Idaho State.
"It was a good first match for us," Head Coach
Gretchen Maloney said. "We played awesome doubles today; really strong serving and returning and we were aggressive at the net."
Utah State (2-0) responded in singles play, defeating ISU at four-of-six singles positions.
Huibre-Mare Botes fell 6-1, 6-0 to Pisareva at the No. 1 singles spot to open singles play; Coburn then fell in two sets (6-1, 6-0) to Demerath at the No. 4 singles position. Idaho State then fell at the Nos. 2 and 5 positions, but finished with wins at the Nos. 3 and 6 positions.
Louise-Mare Botes battled USU's Rhonda Tanui for the win in three sets (3-6, 7-6(7-3), 6-1) while
Angela Walker defeated Alexandra Taylor in two sets, 6-4, 6-2.
"In our singles matches, a few started out a little jittery and nerves were a factor," Maloney said. "Our goals for today's match were depth and consistency. I thought we battled well."
Idaho State returns to play Friday, Feb. 2 against Lewis-Clark State College at 10 a.m. at the tennis courts at Reed Gym.
