ODGEN, Utah – The Idaho State women's basketball team fell 84-73 to Weber State Saturday afternoon at the Dee Events Center in Ogden, Utah.
"We didn't play very hard for about three quarters, we tried to figure it out late and we were not ready to play," Head Coach
Seton Sobolewski said. "That's the long-short of it."
Idaho State (12-7, 4-4 BSC) was led in scoring by junior guard
Saylair Grandon with a season-high 21 points while senior guard
Brooke Blair added 19 points. Sophomore guard
Estefania Ors added 11 points while junior guard
Grace Kenyon added 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Weber State (14-5, 6-2 BSC) opened the first quarter on a 6-2 run in the first 3:47, but six unanswered points from the Bengals gave ISU its first lead of the afternoon (8-6) with 3:33 remaining in the opening quarter. The Bengals extended their lead 14-7 over the next 2:09, but WSU closed the first on a 5-0 run to cut ISU's lead to two, 14-12.
A trey from Weber State to open the second put ISU behind by one, 15-14, but Idaho State responded with an 8-0 run over the next 2:15 to gain a seven-point lead, 22-15. The Bengals extended that lead to nine (27-18) with 5:45 remaining, but two quick threes from WSU's Briana Gray cut the lead to three (27-24) with just under five minutes left in the quarter. Idaho State went ice cold from the field to close the quarter while WSU finished on a 10-0 run to lead 34-27 going into the break.
The Bengals scoring drought continued into the third period as ISU went without a field goal for the first 4:56 until Grandon drove for an easy layup at the 5:04 mark. Weber State opened the capitalized on ISU's scoring woes and extended its lead to as many as 15 in the first five minutes of the period. A jumper from Ors at the 3:42 mark brought ISU within 10, but the Wildcats finished on an 11-6 run to claim a 15-point lead (56-41) heading into the final period.
Idaho State responded, opening the fourth with a 7-0 run to cut WSU's lead to eight (56-48) for its first single-digit deficit since ISU trailed by nine with 8:24 remaining in the third. A WSU three followed by two free throws put the Wildcats back up by double-digits (61-48) with 7:17 remaining. Idaho State would twice cut the lead to 10 in the final minutes, but the Wildcats shot 46.2 percent from the floor including 66.7 percent from three in the final quarter to seal the 84-73 win.
Weber State was led by Larryn Brooks with a game-high 29 points while Kailie Quinn added 21 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
NOTES
- Idaho State gave up a season-high 15 three pointers Saturday at Weber State. It's the most an opponent has netted against the Bengals since Jan. 19, 2017 when Northern Colorado finished with 14 three-point field goals.
- The loss marks the first time since the 2008-09 season that Idaho State has been swept by Weber State.
- Grandon's 21 points marks the first time this season and the fifth time in her career that she has scored 20 or more points. Grandon's career-high is 24 points which she netted at Idaho on Jan. 14, 2017.
