Idaho State Loses Close Game in Overtime

MOSCOW, Idaho -- Idaho State (2-12, 1-6 BSC) held Idaho (7-6-2, 4-1-1) scoreless in regulation, but ceded the game winning goal three minutes into overtime Friday night.

"I was extremely proud of our team tonight," said Head Coach Allison Gibson. "They fought so hard and played with everything they had. This team continues to show up and fight through adversity. I'm just very proud of them."

Brooke Kortekaas applied pressure to the Vandals' defense all night with four shots and two shots on goal. Makena Bambei tallied three shots, but was unable to put any on goal.

Anna Suzuki, Karlin Wurlitzer and Kenya Sherman all shot twice with a shot on goal each. Paige Smith, Delaney Johnston and Christina Krieger put their lone attempts on goal and Natasha Camacho-Bier generated one attempt.

Laule'a Akana-Phillips and Katie Hogarth both had standout efforts in goal for ISU. Akana-Phillips started the game and made five saves with 11 shots faced.

In the 75th minute, she came out of the goal and made a sliding stop before colliding with an Idaho attacker. She left the game and Hogarth replaced her. Hogarth settled in quickly and ended the game with six saves on 15 shots faced.

The Vandals generated more opportunities on offense with 26 shots to the Bengals' 17. Idaho had four more shots on goal with 12 overall and took the corner 12 times. Idaho State was unable to earn a corner kick for the second-straight game. The Bengals had 11 saves while the Vandals had eight. ISU also held the advantage in offside calls with just one violation compared to four for UI.

Idaho applied pressure early on with five of the first six shot attempts of the game. Idaho State responded with six of the final seven shots in the first and carried some momentum to the locker room. The Bengals forced Idaho's keeper to make five saves in the first while the defenders kept pressure off Akana-Phillips, who only had to make two saves.

The Vandals offense controlled the second half with 15 shots and eight corners. Idaho had seven shots on goal, but the attackers were turned away each time. Idaho State's defenders provided a safety net for the aggressive play of Akana-Phillips and Hogarth, stepping into the box themselves to turn away a few shots. Kortekaas forced UI's Makayla Presgrave to make a tough save with just 15 seconds remaining as the game went to overtime.

Idaho State was unable to tally a shot in overtime as the Vandals kept the ball in their offensive half. Hogarth made two saves in the first two minutes before Myah Merino was able to chip a ball over her head in the 93rd minute of play.

Idaho State has another opportunity to collect a road win in Sunday's match against Eastern Washington. The Bengals and Eagles kick off at 1 p.m.
