POCATELLO, Idaho -- Northern Colorado (8-6, 4-1 BSC) defeated Idaho State (2-11, 1-5 BSC) 5-0 at Davis Field Sunday afternoon. The Bears netted a goal in the second minute of play to hold the lead for 88 minutes.
"They are far and away the best team in our conference, so they posed a threat in every line," said Head Coach
Allison Gibson. "We shot ourselves in the foot by giving up two goals in seven minutes. You can't do that and expect to win."
Twenty-three Bengals saw the field as
Makena Bambei led the team with five shots, one on goal.
Jenna Parkhurst was the only ISU player with multiple shots on goal with two on two shot attempts.Â
Delaney Johnston and
Brittany Garrett also had two shots apiece with Johnston putting one on goal. Garrett played all 90 minutes once again and made several strong defensive plays.
"
Brittany Garrett deserves to be defender of the year in this conference," Gibson said.
Brooke Kortekaas,
Christina Krieger,
Natasha Camacho-Bier,
Lexi Cardenas and
Rachel Brownell all shot once with Brownell tallying a shot on goal.
Laule'a Akana-Phillips played all 90 minutes between the posts and made four saves.
Idaho State only trailed Northern Colorado by two shots with 16, but the Bears placed 10 on goal compared to five for the Bengals. Northern Colorado earned six corner kicks in the game while Idaho State never took a corner.
Northern Colorado's Lexi Pulley put the Bears on top just 1:45 into the game, and Maddie Barkow extended the lead in the eighth minute. Maddie Duren scored in the 27th minute to give UNC a 3-0 lead at the half.Â
A pair of second-half goals just 52 seconds apart sealed the 5-0 win for the Bears.Â
Idaho State is on the road against Idaho and Eastern Washington next week. The Bengals have one home game remaining in 2018. They return to Davis Field for senior night against Weber State Oct. 19.
