POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team had the tying run at the plate against UNLV in the second game of the day in the 2018 Marucci Desert Classic in Las Vegas before falling 5-3. ISU lost 15-3 in five innings to San Jose State in its season opener on Friday morning.
The Bengals had 14 hits on the day as six different players each had two hits.
Cassidy FitzGerald had one homer run and two hits while
Emma Bordenkecher had one homer,
two hits and two RBIs.
Makenzie VanSickle,
Genesis Zamora,
Aubrey Creekmore and
Haley Harrison also had two hits.
Danni Ryan and
Mariah Mulcahy took the losses in the circle. Ryan pitched four innings against San Jose State and allowed seven hits, 15 runs and 12 walks. Mulcahy tossed six innings, scattering five hits, two walks and striking out four.
"We competed at the plate and gave to many opportunities to the opponents," Idaho State coach
Candi Letts said. "We need to be more aggressive overall and when we do that we will start to see better quality of play."
UNLV 5 Idaho State 3
ISU out hit UNLV 8-5 but had four errors in the game. UNLV scored four of its five runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Bengals trailed 5-0 after five innings before making a late-game rally.
In the second inning, UNLV scored four runs while taking advantage of two ISU miscues. The Rebels final run was in the fifth inning.
ISU scored its first run in the sixth inning when Bordenkecher homered to right field.
To open the top of the seventh FitzGerald homered to left field and Zamora followed with a double to right-center. Then with one out, Harrison doubled to right-center, scoring Zamora. Harrison later advanced to third on a ground-out by VanSickle but the game ended when Bordenkecher grounded out to third base.
San Jose State 15 Idaho State 3 (5)
The game was tied 2-2 after the top of the third inning. San Jose State then scored 10 runs in the bottom half of the third to take a 12-2 lead. The Spartans also scored three runs in the fourth inning.
Idaho State had six hits and one error while San Jose State had seven hits and two errors.
Ryan took the loss in the circle. VanSickle had one hit and one RBI while Bordenkecher had one hit and one RBI and one run scored. Harrison also scored a run in the game.
Idaho State plays CSUN at 4:45 on Saturday and Hawai'i at 7 p.m. before closing tournament play in Las Vegas with a 12:15 p.m. contest vs. Long Beach State on Sunday, Feb. 18.
