POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women's tennis team lost a 4-3 battle to visiting Weber State in a nonconference matchup Saturday morning at the Reed Gym Tennis Courts. The Bengals swept WSU in doubles play but lost four of six singles matches to give the Wildcats the 4-3 win.
"That was a tough loss today," Head Coach
Gretchen Maloney said. "It was a barnburner today; over five hours of tennis, and it came down to a couple of points. The girls are getting into match shape; this was a good nonconference practice match for us."
The Bengals opened the day with a sweep in doubles play, besting the Wildcats at all three doubles positions.
Huibre-Mare Botes and
Louise-Mare Botes battled at No. 1 doubles for the 7-6 (2-0) win, while
Hristina Cvetkovic and
Megan Poe defeated WSU's Sara Parker and McKenna Lloyd 6-4 to earn the doubles point.
Melissa Coburn and
Madison Fenske completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Weber State took four of the six matches to secure the 4-3 win. ISU's lone singles wins came at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions as
Huibre-Mare Botes bested Pei Hsuan Kuo 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and
Louise-Mare Botes picked up a 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.
Idaho State continues play Feb. 9 at UC Irvine at 1 p.m. MST.
