POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team split a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Portland State, losing 2-1 in 10 innings and rallying to a 5-4 victory in game 2. The 10 inning games ties for the second most innings played in a game and it was the seventh time in series history ISU and Portland State have played extra innings.
The Bengals have played two 18 inning games and five 10 inning games.
"We bounced back from a disappointing loss in game 1," Idaho State coach
Candi Letts said. "We executed when we needed too. Mariah and Ashlyn pitched well to get us the win."
In the two games ISU had only 10 hits.
Genesis Zamora,
Haley Harrison and
Frankie Tago each had two. Tago also had a homer.
Ashlyn Ames took the loss in the 10 inning game. In the two games she pitched 11.2 innings, allowing nine hits, two runs, three walks and six strikeouts. Ames earned the save in the second game.
Mariah Mulcahy earned the win by pitching five innings, allowing nine hits, four runs, four walks and six strikeouts.
In game 1, ISU had only three hits and committed three errors in the field. The game was scoreless through five innings. Portland State scored a run in the sixth and Tago followed with her homer in the seventh. After scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth, the Vikings scored the game-winning run in the 10
th.
In game 2, Idaho State led 1-0 after the first inning.
Makenzie VanSickle led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. She would later score after stealing second and moving to third and scoring on a throwing error.
The Vikings scored two runs in the third and one in the fourth to lead 3-1. ISU scored a run in the fifth inning and the Vikings countered with a run in the bottom half of the inning.
But in the sixth, ISU scored three runs on three hits to take the 5-4 lead and earn the win. With one out,
Emma Bordenkecher walked and
Aubrey Creekmore singled to center field.
Cassidy FitzGerald had an RBI singled on a single to left field that scored Bordenkecher. Zamora then bunted home Creekmore and
Kelsey Breer had an RBI on a sacrifice.
