CHENEY, Wash. – The Idaho State men's tennis team fell at Eastern Washington 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse in Cheney, Wash. The Bengals swept doubles play, but the Eagles won four-of-six singles matches to seal the win.
"The guys came out and played great doubles," Head Coach
Mark Rodel said. "We put ourselves in a position to win the match once again, this time with match points. As a team we are lacking that final step and self-belief that separates success from failure. Despite this, I am pleased with our ability to keep competing."
Idaho State (6-12, 3-7 BSC) swept Eastern Washington (7-10, 3-5 BSC) in doubles play, starting with a win for
David Felix and
Peter Trhac at No. 1 doubles. The pair defeated EWU's Scott Paz and Flavien Raveau 6-3, and
Keegan Sullivan and
Austin Gwilliam followed it up with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
Adam Hornby and
William Edin also picked up a doubles win with a 6-2 win over the Eagles' Victor Pereira and Jeremy Field at No. 2 doubles.
The Bengals and Eagles traded wins to start singles play as EWU's Field defeated ISU's Trhac at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-1. Idaho State responded as Felix defeated EWU's Paz in two sets, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. The Eagles took the next match as Edin fell in two sets at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-4, but the Bengals responded once more, this time with a three-set win at No. 4 singles. Hornby defeated Pereira 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 to give ISU a 3-2 edge with two matches to play.
Eastern Washington stole both of the final singles matches, winning in three sets at No. 5 singles (4-6, 7-5, 7-5) and in two sets at No. 6 singles (6-4, 7-6(5-0)) to seal the 4-3 win.
Idaho State continues play Sunday, April 15 at Idaho. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. MST.
