POCATELLO, Idaho- For the second straight weekend the Idaho State softball team took two of three games from the second place team in the Big Sky Conference.
After dropping a 3-2 12 inning game on Friday, the Bengals rallied on Saturday to sweep the doubleheader, winning 6-3 and 9-0 in five innings.
The Bengals had 18 hits and hit .391 on the day.
Frankie Tago and
Kelsey Breer led the attack as each went 3-5 from the plate. Tago had two RBIs while Breer had one RBI and scored three runs.
Nine different Bengals had hits and seven players had two hits or more.
Ashlyn Ames and
Aubrey Creekmore each had a home run and
Shayna Dahlen had four RBIs and two hits.
"We knew Sac State was going to come out and go for the series win when we saw they were pitching their ace," Idaho State coach
Candi Letts said. "We got down but we settled in and we picked pitches that we knew we could hit hard. We got on a roll and our confidence came way up. We were like, 'Hey we are not going to lose.' We just took one pitch at a time and hit the pitch we wanted and hit it hard.""
Ashlyn Ames earned the shutout in game 2, tossing a complete five inning game, allowing only two hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
Mariah Mulcahy earned the win in game 1, pitching a complete game, allowing seven hits, three runs, four walks and two strike outs.
"Our team made good decisions on defense," Letts said. "Offensively we got the balls that fell in today. Today the balls fell in and found some grass. Like any team when you get a domino effect it is awesome. We got on a hot streak and stayed hot.
In the first game, ISU trailed 3-0 after the top of the fourth inning. Creekmore started a three-run inning in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer to left field.
"When we were down 3-0 and Aubrey misplayed a ball in center field and then she came back and hit a homerun that broke the ice for us," Letts said. "All of a sudden we started barreling up the ball and the girls got confident and were aggressive."
Haley Harrison then singled and
Ashlyn Ames walked. Tago followed with an RBI single to right field. Later in the inning, Breer had an RBI single to left field.
The Bengals scored two runs in the fifth inning thanks to a two-run homer to left field by Ames and ISU added another run in the sixth on an RBI single to left field by Dahlen.
In the 9-0 win, Idaho State scored three runs in the second inning, two in the third and fourth in the fourth to earn the win.
In the second inning, Dahlen had a two RBI double down the left field line. Dahlen later scored on a throwing error to give ISU the 3-0 lead after the second inning.
In the third inning
Genesis Zamora had a two RBI double down the right field line that scored Breer and
Cassidy FitzGerald.
In the fourth, Ames led off with a double to right-center and Tago followed with a single to right-center that scored
Kelsie Cota, who was pinch running for Ames. FitzGerald had an RBI single and Dahlen had a sacrifice RBI. Breer, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning, scored on a Sac State throwing error for the final run of the inning.
"When we got down we battled," Letts said. "We found a way to be competitive, be in the game and give ourselves a chance to win. Today they battled and got some balls."
Idaho State plays a three-game series at Weber State April 20-21.
