POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women's tennis team fell 4-3 to Sacramento State Sunday afternoon at the Reed Gym Tennis Courts.
"It was a tough day today," Head Coach
Gretchen Maloney said. "We barely lost the doubles point after being up. We had multiple changes and match points to win. Our shot selection needs to get better, and our unforced errors need to be reduced. We will learn from this loss and get better."
Sacramento State (10-11, 8-2 BSC) opened doubles play with a win at No. 1 doubles as
Hristina Cvetkovic and
Megan Poe fell to Carolina Chernyetsky and Jenna Dorian 6-3. Idaho State (8-11, 5-4 BSC) evened doubles play as
Huibre-Mare Botes and
Louise-Mare Botes defeated SAC's Maria Gonzalez and Shamika Dhar 6-3 at No. 2 doubles. But the Hornets clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, the Bengals won three-of-six matches starting with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
Huibre-Mare Botes opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Gonzalez at No. 2 singles while her sister,
Louise-Mare Botes followed up with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Sofi Wicker at No. 3 singles.
The Hornets claimed the next two singles wins with wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, but Idaho State's Poe defeated Chernyetsky 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to tie the match at 3-all. However, the Hornets took the final match in a three-set battle as SAC's Dhar defeated ISU's Walker 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 to seal the 4-3 win.
Idaho State continues play at North Dakota on Friday, April 20. The match is set to begin at 8 a.m. MST.
