Softball Drops Both in DH to Boise State

POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State softball team dropped two games to visiting Boise State Tuesday afternoon at Miller Ranch Stadium. The Broncos took the first game 6-3 followed by a 16-0 decision in five innings in the second.

Mariah Mulcahy took the loss in both games, pitching three innings allowing five hits, four runs two walks and three strikeouts in the first game with two innings pitched allowing five hits, three runs one walk and one strikeout in the second game.

In the first game, Boise State (25-11) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after earning runs in the top of the first and top of the second. Idaho State (5-25) responded in the bottom of the second as Emma Bordenkecher led with a double to left center. Cassidy FitzGerald earned the RBI with the sacrifice fly, sending Bordenkecher home, bringing the Bengals within one, 2-1.

Neither team scored in the third or fourth innings, but the Bengals had two big hits in the fifth to take the lead. Kelsey Breer opened the hits with a single to right center, and Makenzie VanSickle connected for her first career home run for two RBIs and the 3-2 lead.

The Broncos would add four runs in the top of the sixth and hold the Bengals scoreless in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to earn the 6-3 victory.

"In the first game, they hit the ball great, but we played good defense," Head Coach Candi Letts said. "We were able to get out of a lot of situations. We didn't, per se, tear it up as far as hitting, but we did enough to put ourselves in a position to win the first game. We just had one miscue and let that game get away from us."

In the second game the Bengals' struggled, finishing with three hits and no runs while giving up 14 hits and 16 runs to the Broncos. Breer, Frankie Tago and Aubrey Creekmore each recorded hits on the day, all singles.

Idaho State is back in action Friday, April 6 against visiting Northern Colorado in a double-header scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Miller Ranch Stadium.
