BOISE, Idaho – The Idaho State men's tennis team battled Boise State Sunday evening at the Boas Tennis Complex before falling 4-3 to the Broncos.
"This evening, ISU Tennis played the single-best match against Boise State that I've been a part of, and definitely the best match of the year," Head Coach
Mark Rodel said. "The team played exceptionally well, from taking the doubles point in a tiebreaker at No. 2 to the match boiling down to the third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles."
Idaho State (6-10) opened the match with a doubles win, as
David Felix and
Peter Trhac defeated BSU's Kyle Butters and Jack Heslin 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Boise State (9-12) took the next doubles match with a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles. The Bengals sealed the doubles point as
William Edin and
Adam Hornby grinded out a 7-6(7-5) win over Stefan Lalovic and Pedro Platzeck at No. 2 doubles.
The Broncos won the first three singles matches at No. 3, No. 6 and No. 5 singles, with each match ending in two sets. Felix gave ISU its first singles win, as Felix defeated Wyatt DeMulling in two sets, 7-6, 6-2. Hornby delivered a big 6-3, 7-6 win over Mattia Bedolo at No. 4 singles to tie the match 3-all, but the Broncos stole the final point with a win at No. 1 singles. Trhac fell to Heslin in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 to give the Broncos the 4-3 win.
"Peter played exceptionally well; he left it all on the line," Rodel said. "I couldn't be more proud of the team. They finally put themselves in a position to win, and unfortunately we came up a little bit short."
Idaho State continues play Saturday, April 14 at Eastern Washington in Cheney, Wash. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. MST.
