POCATELLO, Idaho -- Idaho State soccer struck first in its home exhibition match against Utah Valley on Monday, but late goals at the end of the first and second periods gave UVU the 3-1 victory.
"I think the biggest lesson we took away really was just that, you know, we can't take breaks," said Assistant Coach
Stephanie Beall. "Those moments were you kind of snap off for a second really hurt us. Overall it's everybody's got to be fully engaged and you know, like coach said, at a level 10 for 90 minutes."

The Bengals capitalized early on a turnover by the Wolverines in their offensive zone.
Esmeralda Nunez brought the ball across the midline and passed upfield to
Meaghan Bare on the right side. Bare dribbled deep into the box before passing across the face of the goal to
Corinne Sanderson, who found the back of the net from the left side of the goal box. The goal came in the 15th minute of play.
Utah Valley's Sadie Brockbank knotted up the game in the 23rd minute with a shot from just in front of the goal and over the outstretched hand of freshman goaltender
Laule'a Akana-Phillips. The game remained scoreless for nearly 22 minutes before Amanda Mangelson buried a rocket from the top right of the 18-yard box with just 15 seconds remaining in the first period.Â
ISU had several chances to tie the game at two goals apiece, but UVU netminder Sarah Davis turned away the Bengals attack.
Jenna Parkhurst fired a shot near the end line with seven minutes remaining in the first, but Davis got horizontal and poked the ball away with the her right hand. In the second half,
Brooke Kortekaas slipped behind the defense and aimed for the top shelf, but Davis deflected the shot just enough to send it off the cross bar and keep the game 2-1 in UVU's favor.
In the end, it was Mangelson who would score the last goal, her second on the day, with an attempt that went off
Katie Hogarth's mitt on a layout save attempt. Â
Makena Bambei led the Bengals in shots with four, two of which were on goal. Parkhurst added three shots and Bare, Sanderson,
Tristen Spooner and Kortekaas each took two attempts.Â
Utah Valley was led by Breanna McCarter, who tallied six shots, two on goal. Mangelson was the difference maker for the Wolverines, netting two goals on three attempts after coming off the bench.Â
This was the first loss for ISU this preseason. They face Westminster College (Utah) in the final match of the preseason Friday at 2 p.m. on Davis Field.
