Bengals Take Down No. 22 North Dakota 25-21

 
GRAND FORKS, ND- The Idaho State football team held No. 22 North Dakota scoreless in the second half and rallied to a 25-21 win at the Alerus Center in front of a crowd of 11,157. This is the first win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 23/25 North Dakota in 2015 in Grand Forks.

Idaho State had 566 yards of total offense, tied for the 11th most yards in a game since 2004. North Dakota had 469 yards of offense but held the Fighting Hawks to 150 in the second half.

Michael Dean had nine receptions for 130 yards and Mitch Gueller caught three passes for 108 yards and one touchdown.

Ty Flanagan carried the ball nine times for 119 yards and James Madison had 25 carries for 106 yards and one touchdown. Tanner Gueller was 16-31 with one touchdown, one interception and 293 yards passing. He also carried the ball 10 times for 53 yards.

Kody Graves led the Bengal defense with a career-high 14 tackles and one interception. Christian Holland and Oshea Trujillo each had eight tackles. Christian McFarland had seven tackles and a game-sealing interception in the fourth quarter.

Anthony Ricks also prevented a North Dakota touchdown by recovering a ball in the endzone.

Both offenses were firing in the first half but freshman kicker Campbell Sheidow kept the Bengals in the game by going four-for-four in the first two quarters.

The Bengals trailed 14-3 with 2:10 left in the first quarter. Sheidow 38-yard field goal with two seconds left in the quarter to cut the Fighting Hawk lead to 14-6.

Later in the second quarter, North Dakota was driving and on a first and goal from the four yard line when running back Brady Oliveira fumbled the ball and Ricks recovered in the end zone.

The Bengals then marched down field to score a touchdown on a two-yard run by Madison with 8:14 left in the first half. The scoring drive was highlighted by a 55-yard run by Flanagan and a 23-yard run by Madison.

Later in the quarter Sheidow kicked a 22-yarder with 4:03 left to give ISU a 16-14 lead. UND had one more second quarter touchdown and Sheidow kicked his fourth field goal of the game with 40 seconds left to make the score 21-19 at halftime.

ISU scored the goal-ahead touchdown with Tanner Gueller hit his brother Mitch on a 67-yard strike with 7:38 remaining.

North Dakota attempted game-winning drive ended on a fourth and 11 from the ISU 15-yard line. McFarland picked off quarterback Nate Ketteringham and the Bengal offense then ran out of the clock.

Idaho State returns home for a two-game home stand beginning Saturday, Sept. 29 vs. NAU on Homecoming Week. Kickoff is at 2:35 p.m. The Bengals then host Idaho on Oct.6.

- Austin Campbell was the game captain with Joe Martin, James Madison and Tanner Gueller.
- Campbell Sheidow made a career-long 44-yard field goal in the first quarter.
- 55-yard run by Ty Flanagan was a career-long.
- Campbell Sheidow's four field goals tied for the second most made in a game in program history. Jeremy Hershey (2003) and James Ferrell (1997) were 5-5. Case deBruijn (1981) was 4-5 and Brendon Garcia was 4-4 (2013).
- Kody Graves had his first career interception in the third quarter.
-  The 273 rushing yards was the sixth most in a game since 2007.
- Mitch Gueller 67-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter was his sixth play of 60 yards or more in his career. It was his fifth longest catch of his career.
