Brandon Boyd scored the winning basket on a layup with two seconds left in regulation to lift Idaho State to a 72-70 win at Sacramento State on Saturday night at the Hornets Nest. The Bengals are now 7-7 and 3-2 in Big Sky play. Sac State dropped to 6-7 and 0-4 league.
"We had a lot of guys do a lot of really good things for us," Idaho State coach
Bill Evans said. "A bunch of guys went in and really contributed. This was really a great team effort."
Idaho State trailed 56-49 with 8:49 left in the game. The Bengals then went on an 11-4 run to tie the game at 60 after two free throws from
Jared Stutzman with 4:05 to play.
Two minutes later and trailing 64-62,
Chier Maker hit a 3-pointer with 2:06 left to help ISU regain the lead at 65-64. Sacramento State tied the game at 65 before Idaho State scored the next five points on two free throws from Maker and a 3-pointer by Boyd to make the score 70-65 with 41 seconds left in the game.
"We were always confident," Evans said on the second-half rally. "We just kept chipping away. We didn't allow them to get very many fast break baskets."
Sac State scored five points in the next 30 seconds to tie the game at 70 but after a layup by Marcus Graves with nine seconds left, Boyd netted the winning basket to give Idaho State the victory.
Idaho State had four players score in double figures, led by Stutzman's 13. Maker and
Kelvin Jones each had 12 points and eight rebounds while Boyd had 10.
Balint Mocsan had a career-high eight assists.
The Bengals had 20 assists on 25 baskets and out rebounded the Hornets 36-31.
Idaho State shot 42.4 percent from the field and was 13-14 from the foul line. The Bengals were 9-26 from the three-point line.
Sacramento State shot 49.1 percent but made only seven free throws on 14 attempts while making nine 3-pointers on 17 attempts.
Idaho State is back in action Thursday, Jan. 17 at Weber State. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

- The last three meetings between the two schools have resulted in Idaho State wins but they have been by six points or less.
