Bengals Fight in 74-68 Loss to Cal Baptist

POCATELLO, Idaho-
The Idaho State women's basketball team fell in a tough 74-68 battle to Cal Baptist on Monday night in Reed Gym.

The Lancers shot 41 percent (24-58) from the field and 33 percent from three-point range against the Bengals' 33 percent (25-75) from the floor and 24 percent (4-17) from 3. ISU had four players hit double-digit points.

Defensively, ISU recorded a season-high 11 blocks, 10 steals, and out-boarded CBU 49-48 including 23 offensive rebounds.

Callie Bourne led Idaho State with a career-tying 20 points, a career-high 12 boards, and a season-tying two steals. The sophomore went 7-20 from the floor, 2-7 from three, and 4-7 from the free-throw line.

Diaba Konate hit a career-high 16 points, going 5-10 from field-goal range and a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line while recording three assists and two steals. Dora Goles put up 10 points, six coming from beyond the three-point arc. Goles also tallied seven defensive boards.

Tomekia Whitman had her first start for the Bengals, scoring a career-tying 12 points off of five made field goals and two made free-throws. The freshman tied her career-high 10 boards with eight coming from the offensive end to help ISU earn 15 second chance points. Whitman also produced two steals and a career-high two blocks.

Idaho State jumped ahead with a 4-0 run in the first quarter before the Lancers came back to tie it at eight and finish the quarter tied at 12. The Bengals tied their season-high six blocks in the first quarter, led by Ellie Smith with a career-high three.

The Bengals led the Lancers 28-26 heading into halftime. ISU and CBU both shot 32 percent (10-31) from the floor in the first half. The Bengals were 0-3 from three-point range while holding CBU to 15 percent (2-13) from three after eight blocked shots.

Ellie Smith recorded a career-high four blocks in the first half and went on to finish the game with five.

The Lancers had a seven-point lead in the third quarter, 40-33, before Goles and Whitman forced three CBU turnovers that led to six points for the Bengals. Bourne also nailed her first three of the night to cut the Bengal deficit by one at 42-41. The quarter would end tied at 46 with Whitman scoring four points in the last 58 seconds of the quarter.

ISU had its biggest lead of the night in the fourth at 57-51 after scoring eight points from the paint. The Lancers would challenge ISU, shooting 53 percent (8-15) from the floor and 75 percent (3-4) from three-point range in the final quarter to give them a 74-68 victory.

Idaho State plays its final non-conference game against Utah State in Logan, Utah on Thursday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m. (MST). Conference play begins Dec. 28 as the Bengals take on Idaho in Moscow at 3 p.m. (MST).
