POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team opened the Colorado State Classic by taking Nebraska to nine innings before losing 10-4. The Bengals then lost to Colorado State 16-0 in five innings.
"We had several opportunities to beat Nebraska and didn't finish it," Idaho State coach
Candi Letts said. "When competing against the Power 5 we have to capitalize when we created it. Colorado State hit it hard and we just couldn't get the ball to drop in. We will turn these situations into positives in upcoming games."
Against Nebraska, Idaho State rallied from behind to send the game into extra innings. The Bengals trailed 3-0 after the top of the sixth inning.
Idaho State then scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth on one hit and one error. To lead off the sixth,
MaKenzie Van Sickle was hit by a pitch and
Emma Bordenkecher doubled to right field.
Cassidy FitzGerald then reached base on an error, allowing Van Sickle and Bordenkecher to score.
Idaho State tied the game at three in the bottom of the seventh.
Jayden DeMoss led off with a ground-rule double and she was then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Courtney Wiley. DeMoss later scored off another Nebraska error.
Nebraska scored a run in the top of the eighth inning and the Bengals countered with a run in the bottom half of the inning thanks to an RBI single by
Shayna Dahlen.
Nebraska then scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning to earn the victory. Bordenkecher and DeMoss each had two hits.
Autumn Pease went 6.1 innings, allowed seven hits, three runs, two walks and struck out three.
Kelsea Sweeney went the final 2.2 innings, allowing six hits, seven runs (five earned) while walking four and striking out one.
Against Colorado State, the Bengals were held without a hit. CSU scored its 16 runs on 14 hits.
Idaho State plays Stony Brook at 9 a.m. and Nebraska at 11:15 a.m. tomorrow morning in Fort Collins.
