POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team went toe-to-toe with Cal State Fullerton on Thursday night in its 2019 season opener at the Titan Classic. Fullerton, who earned a berth in the 2018 NCAA tournament, beat the Bengals 3-2 after a walk-off single in the seventh inning.
"We played hard throughout the game," Idaho State coach
Candi Letts said. "We will continue to make adjustments so we can capitalize on the opportunities that present themselves. Mariah threw a great game and we had some timely hits from Danni, Emma and Shayna."
Mariah Mulcahy went six innings, allowed only five hits, while striking out three, walking four and allowing only one earned run.
Kelsea Sweeney pitched the seventh inning for the Bengals to earn the loss.
Cal State Fullerton scored three runs on seven hits while ISU had two runs on four hits and one error.
Emma Bordenkecher was 2-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
Danni Ryan was 1-3 with an RBI and
Shayna Dahlen was 1-3 and scored one run.
The Bengals led 1-0 after the first inning. With two outs, Bordenkecher singled up the middle and Ryan followed with an RBI single for the first run.
Fullerton tied the game at one in the second inning but the Bengals took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Dahlen opened with a double to left field and she later scored on a Bordenkecher single to left.
Cal State Fullerton tied the game at two in the bottom of the fifth and scored the winning run on the walk-off single in the seventh.
Idaho State continues play in the Titan Classic on Friday with a 2 p.m. game vs. Louisville and a 7 p.m. contest vs. Loyola Marymount.
