POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women's tennis team wrapped up its trip to Montana with a 5-2 win over Montana State in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center Sunday afternoon. The team started strong with the doubles win before claiming four of the six singles matches.
"We played solid in doubles again today," said Head Coach
Gretchen Maloney. "We were more consistent in our singles play. It was a good win for us."
The Bengals captured the doubles point with wins at courts No. 2 and 3.
Louise-Mare Botes and
Alexandra Arkhipov teamed up for a 6-4 win before
Melissa Coburn and
Madison Fenske topped their opponents with the same result.
The Bobcats evened the score with a win at court No. 1 to open singles play. Then Arkhipov put the Bengals back in front with a 6-3, 6-3 win at position No. 4.
Her doubles partner, Botes, picked up her own singles victory with an equally dominant performance. She defeated MSU's Annie Walker 6-2, 6-3. Montana State was able to pull within one point of Idaho State with a win at No. 3 singles, but it would be the last victory of the match for the home team.
Angela Walker and
Megan Poe both collected straight-set victories to conclude play. Walker disposed of her opponent 6-2, 6-3 before Poe rounded out the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win.
The win brings ISU to 5-6 overall with a 2-3 mark against Big Sky opponents. MSU is now 3-10 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
Idaho State will resume play next week against two nonconference opponents. The Bengals' spring break includes matches against Arizona Christian and Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Ariz. ISU faces ACU on March 18 and GCU the following day.
