Bengals Begin Big Sky Play vs. Portland State at Miller Ranch Stadium

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team opens Big Sky  Conference play on Saturday, March 23 vs. Portland State. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. and the two teams play a single-game on March 24 at 12 p.m. Game 1 of the doubleheader on Saturday and the final game of the series on Sunday will be broadcast on KISU with Mark Liptak calling the action. Scouting Portland State
Portland State enters Big Sky Conference play with a 9-15 record. The Vikings hit .267 as a team. Darian Lindsey hits .389 and Jessica Flanagan hits .319 to lead the offense.  Portland State has nine home runs and 88 RBIs on the season.  The pitching staff has a 4.34 era, Serafine Parrish has pitched 29.2 innings, has a 3.02 era and a 1-2 record. Katie Schroeder has tossed a team-best 68.2 innings, has a 5-6 record and a 3.67 era.

Portland State is coming off a tournament at Seattle. The Vikings went 1-3, beating North Dakota 6-3 and losing to UND 5-4. PSU lost to Seattle U, 3-0 and 7-1.

Recapping UVU
For the first time this season Idaho State has won two straight games. The Bengals beat UVU 5-0 in game 1 and 8-6 in game 2.

The Bengals pounded out 17 hits in the two games, led by Emma Bordenkecher going 3-4 with four RBIs, one home run, two doubles and three walks. Billie Jean Wells was 4-6 with two RBIs and three doubles. MaKenzie Van Sickle was 3-6 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored. Jayden DeMoss had two hits and two RBIs. Eight different Bengals had hits on the day.

Autumn Pease earned the win in the game 1, 5-0, win. She pitched five innings, allowed one hit, one walk and struck out nine. Kelsea Sweeney earned the game 2, 8-6, win. She went five innings, allowed seven hits, four runs, one walk while striking out three. Mariah Mulcahy pitched the final two innings of both games. She struck out five while allowing five hits and two runs.

Improved Pitching
The Bengal pitching staff has greatly improved since last year. In 2018, the Bengal pitching staff had a 7.90 era heading into Big Sky Conference play. Ashlyn Ames had the best era at 4.52. This year the pitching staff has a 4.60 era heading into league play. Autumn Pease has the best era at 2.90. She has a 5-2 record in a team-best 60.1 innings of work.  Teams are hitting .238 off Pease.

Bordenkecher Improved at the Plate
Emma Bordenkecher hit .273 with two home runs and 20 RBIs in 2018. This year she is hitting .338 with five home runs and 19 RBIs. As a freshman in 2017 she hit .281 with eight homers and 33 RBIs.
