POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women's tennis team was defeated 5-2 by Sacramento State Saturday afternoon at the Sacramento State Tennis Courts. The Bengals tied the match at 2-2 after singles wins from
Hristina Cvetkovic and
Megan Poe, but fell in the remaining matches of the loss.
"We got off to a slow start in doubles and that seemed to kill our momentum a little bit in singles," said Head Coach
Gretchen Maloney. "They were pretty good offensively with their ground strokes and we had a hard time counter attacking."
After dropping the first doubles match at No. 2, ISU evened the series with a 6-3 win from
Melissa Coburn and
Madison Fenske at No. 3. Shortly after, SAC clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 1.
Cvetkovic collected the first win of singles play at the No. 2 position. She topped her opponent 6-4 in the first set and collected a shutout victory in the second to seal the match.
The Hornets responded with a win at No. 1 singles to regain the lead. However, Poe pulled the Bengals even once again with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6.
Sacramento State won the next two matches handily to clinch the match.
Alexandra Arkhipov was the last ISU player on the court and battled hard before falling 7-5, 6-4.
Idaho State is now 6-9 with a 2-5 mark in Big Sky play. Sacramento State improved to 2-8 with a 2-4 conference record.
After six consecutive matches on the road, Idaho State will return home to Reed Gym next week. The Bengals have a lone conference contest against Northern Colorado next Saturday, March 30.
