MISSOULA, Mont. – The Idaho State women's tennis team lost a tight match 4-3 to the Montana Grizzlies at the PEAK Racquet Club Saturday morning. Idaho State claimed the doubles point, but lost two, three-set matches in singles play to open the door for UM.
"We played some really good doubles today," said Head Coach
Gretchen Maloney. "In singles we have just got to get more mentally tough on big points. That match came down to a few points."
Madison Fenske and
Melissa Coburn were the first to finish in doubles play. The No. 3 duo topped UM's Claudia Reguant and Lidia Dukic 6-3.
Louise-Mare Botes and
Alexandra Arkhipov followed with a 6-4 win at court No. 2 to seal the doubles win.
The Grizzlies evened the match with a win at No. 1 singles, but Botes quickly reestablished the lead with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2.
Montana took the next two contests, placing the weight of match on the shoulders on
Megan Poe at court No. 6. She lost the first set 4-6 but was able to shrug it off, claiming the match with 6-3 and 7-5 wins in the final sets.
With the match tied 3-3, all eyes were on the No. 5 singles match between
Angela Walker and UM's Dukic. The two battled in the first set with Dukic claiming a narrow 7-6 (3) win before Walker responded with a 2-6 victory in the second. In the end, Dukic prevailed with a 6-2 win to claim the set and match.
Idaho State is now 4-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Montana is 2-9 overall but has won both of its Big Sky matches.
The Bengal's tennis team is back in action against Montana State tomorrow morning. ISU and MSU will begin play at 10 a.m. in Bozeman, Mont.
