POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team won the series at Southern Utah with the 7-3 win on Saturday afternoon in Cedar City, Utah. Idaho State is now 7-7 in Big Sky Conference play and 17-25 overall. With the victory Idaho State has qualified for the Big Sky Tournament in Sacramento in two weeks.
Idaho State had nine hits and committed one error while Southern Utah had 10 hits.
Courtney Wiley was 2-4 and
Emma Bordenkecher was 2-4 with a homer and two RBIs.
Frankie Tago also homered in the game.
Kelsea Sweeney earned the win. She tossed a complete game, scattering 10 hits, while striking out six and giving up three runs.
"We played hard today," Idaho State coach
Candi Letts said. "We hit with runners in scoring position today. We got a strong pitching performance from
Kelsea Sweeney and solid defense behind her."
Idaho State scored six of its seven runs in the first four innings. In the first inning,
Aubrey Creekmore singled home the first run of the game on a single to left-center.
Southern Utah scored a run in the bottom of the first but the Bengals retook the lead in the second on Tago's homer to centerfield.
In the third inning,
MaKenzie Van Sickle walked and Wiley followed with a single to left-center. Van Sickle would later score on a wild pitch.
In the fourth inning with two outs,
Shayna Dahlen doubled to right field and
Jayden DeMoss then tripled to right field for the first of a three-run inning.
Van Sickle then reached on a fielder's choice that scored DeMoss. Later in the inning, Bordenkecher singled to centerfield, scoring Wiley.
SUU scored two runs in the fifth inning and Idaho State added an insurance run with a homer to centerfield by Bordenkecher in the seventh.
Idaho State concludes the regular season May 3-4 at Miller Ranch Stadium vs. Sacramento State. The doubleheader on May 3 starts at 2 p.m. and the single-game on May 4 begins at 1 p.m.
