POCATELLO, Idaho- William Edin, a former Idaho State tennis athlete, is now only the second student-athlete in history to receive a NCAA post-graduate scholarship. Edin, a native of Sweden
, graduated from Idaho State in 2018 and will now find himself studying at Harvard University beginning the fall of 2019.
The NCAA post-graduate scholarship is awarded to a total of only 45 student-athletes across the country with only 15 athletes chosen from each division in each sport season. Men's basketball Erik Nakken was the first Bengal to win this award in 2018.
During his time at Idaho State, Edin received his bachelor's in economics as well as an MBA and finished both with a 4.0 GPA. In 2018, he earned the 2018 NCAA Division I Academic All-American second-team award and the Big Sky Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He was also awarded the Most Outstanding Economics Student Award, the J. Wilburn Scholarship for Outstanding Academic Achievements, and the Dr. Michihide D. Totoki Scholarship for Achievements in the Field of Economics.
Being a student-athlete helped prepare Edin for his new adventure in Boston.
"I was able to put all the hard work and discipline that is required at the DI level toward my academics," he said. "I spent a lot of time on my academics because I knew that if I put in a sufficient amount of time I would have success and confidence in my work. Being on a team with a group of guys that support you even when you don't feel like studying helps you push through those times."
He was also highly involved in extracurricular activities as he was the president of the economics club and served on the Supreme Court Justice for the student advisory government.
"I wanted to be a good role model for the younger guys on the team which motivated me to set a good example on how to be a good student-athlete and how to conduct yourself not only on the court but also in the classroom," Edin stated.
Edin is beyond excited to have earned this honor and thinks highly of his experiences at Idaho State.
"It's a huge honor," Edin said. "I'm so thankful for the ISU community and the athletic department for my success would not have been possible without them. The coaching staff was always very helpful and understanding and was there for me when I needed advice.
"
Edin plans to receive his Juris Doctorate in a three year program for International Law at Harvard University.
"Harvard is one of the most famous universities in the world," Edin said. "The networking is unbelievable and for an international career I don't think there's a better school to go to. I'm looking forward to getting to campus and interacting with successful people from different backgrounds. It will be a very surreal experience."
