POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State women's basketball team has announced the signing of three players for the 2021-2022 season: Sophia Covello, Maria "Mia" Flor, and Brooke Malone.
Â
Covello comes to Pocatello from her hometown of Roseville, Calif. The 5'9 guard will graduate from Woodcreak High School in 2021 where she was named a 2x Sacramento Bee All-Metro Selection (2019-20), 2x first team all-conference (2019-20), and 2x Varsity Player of the Year (2019-20).Â
Â
"We feel fortunate to add a guard with Sophia's ability to our team," said Head Coach
Seton Sobolewski. "She's a long, athletic multi dimensional guard. I can see her having the ability to play several positions."
Â
She played four years of varsity basketball where she averaged 11 points per game as team captain. Covello was also a member of the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS).
Â
"I felt a great connection talking with the coaches and players and I loved the campus!" said Covello.

Â
Flor joins the Bengal program from Brier, Wash., where she will graduate from King's High School in 2021. Her freshman year, the 6'2 forward earned second team all-conference and would go on to be named first team all-conference, Knight Time Classic All-Tournament Team, Team MVMP (Most Valuable Minutes Played), Regional State Game Sportsmanship Award, team captain honors, and the 2019 Summer Season Nike Team Northwest 16U Team Captain her sophomore year.Â
Â
"We love Mia's energy and how hard she works," said Sobolewski. "She is going to come in and add athleticism, defense, rebounding, and a winning mentality to our team."
Â
Her junior year, she again earned first team all-conference honors, the State Tournament Sportsmanship Award, Team MVMP, and was named team captain and made the State Tournament All-Tournament second team.
Â
"Mia is also going to add needed depth to our forward positions," Sobolewski added.
Â
During her high school career, Flor was a member of HS Honors Designation every semester except one and volunteered for King's Shooting Stars Camp (2017-19) and the King's High School Invitational Basketball Tournament (2017-19).
"I love the Big Sky League and was definitely looking for a small college town with strong community support," said Flor. "I am interested in Sociology with a Criminology concentration, which Idaho State offers. ISU checked off all of my boxes and has the absolute best coaching staff and a consistently strong team that wins! My family has strong ties to Idaho and ISU was a perfect fit."
Â
Malone will join the Bengals from her hometown of Perth, Western Australia.Â
Â
"Brooke has everything we look for in a player," Sobolewski said. "The talent, skill, size, and toughness are there to help her become a really good basketball player."
Â
The 6'1 forward graduated from Willetton Senior High School in 2020 where she was a part of a national performance program for two years. She represented Western Australia for seven years while being named her u18 club team's MVP in 2018 and 2019.
"Brooke will have the ability to play multiple forward and guard positions," added Sobolewski.
Â
She helped lead her school to Australian championships while averaging 14.29 points per game, 7.41 rebounds per game, and 1.71 assists per game.
"The family environment reminded me of home and I love their drive for success," said Malone.
