POCATELLO, Idaho- A 14-2 run by Santa Clara in the first half helped spark the Santa Clara Broncos to a 62-49 victory over Idaho State in the season opener for both teams at the Leavey Center in Santa Clara, Calif.
The Bengals led for a majority of the first 12 minutes of the game with the biggest lead being 5-0 in the first two minutes of the game. The Bengals also led 8-4 after a 3-pointer by
Daxton Carr with 12:10 left in the first half.
With 8:32 until halftime
Malik Porter hit a 3-pointer to give ISU an 11-8 lead. Over the next four minutes Santa Clara went on a 14-2 run to take a 22-13 lead with just over four minutes until halftime.
Idaho State trailed 30-18 at halftime and would trail by as many as 20 points midway through the second half and would get no closer than 12 points the rest way.
Idaho State shot 34.7 percent from the field (17-49) and 36.4 percent from the three-point line (8-22). The Bengals were 7-12 from the free throw line.
ISU out rebounded Santa Clara 36-35.
Daxton Carr led the Bengals with six.
Tarik Cool led Idaho State in scoring with 11 points. Porter and Carr each had 10 points.
Idaho State continues play at Santa Clara with a contest vs. Nicholls State on Nov. 27 at 5 p.m. (MST) and then against UC Davis on Nov. 28 at 2 p.m. (MST).
Following the three-game invitational at Santa Clara, the Bengals play at Utah on Dec. 8.
