Bengals Blow By SUU

POCATELLO, Idaho- A solid first half by the Idaho State women's basketball team propelled the Bengals to a 73-54 win over Southern Utah on Saturday afternoon at Reed Gym.

The Bengals jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in the first three minutes after a 3-pointer by Callie Bourne and the lead was later extended to 19-6 after another layup by Bourne with 4:07 left in the quarter. Idaho State led 26-16 at the end of the first quarter and extended its lead to as many as 17 at two different times in the second quarter.

Dora Goles scored 10 of her points in the first half while Bourne added eight points. The Bengals shot 48 percent from the field in the first half while holding the T-Birds to 26.9 percent. Idaho State led 39-24 at halftime and the Bengal defense held SUU scoreless for nearly six minutes in the second quarter.

Leading by 15 at halftime, Idaho State extended its lead to 46-28 four minutes into the third quarter after a three-point play by Tomekia Whitman. Whitman later sunk 3-pointer in the final seconds of the quarter to extend the Bengal lead to 61-39.

Idaho State led by as many as 27 points in the final quarter to cruise to the victory.

ISU shot 47 percent the field and held Southern Utah to 31 percent shooting. Idaho State was 9-21 from the three-point line while the T-Birds were held to 3-14 shooting from beyond the arc. The Bengal defense forced 14 SUU turnovers while winning the battle of the boards 39-29.

Idaho State had 18 assists, led by Diaba Konate's six. Goles led the Bengal scoring with 20 points on 7-11 shooting. Whitman had 12 points and Bourne added her ninth-consecutive double digit game with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Idaho State returns to the court on Feb. 6 for a 6:30 p.m. contest at NAU. Idaho State then plays at Sacramento State on Feb. 8.
