Bengals Take Down UTEP

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State women's tennis team defeated UTEP 5-2 on Saturday morning in Logan, Utah.

"It was a tough battle today," Idaho State coach Gretchen Maloney said. "Winning the doubles point was helpful, giving us momentum going into singles. The girls played really smart and were willing to make changes to win the match. It was a great team effort. This was a really big win for us today."

The Bengals earned the doubles point thanks to a 6-3 victory by Hristina Cvetkovic and Megan Poe over Vanessa Valdez and Erandi Martinez. The other Bengal doubles victory came when Alexandra Arkhipov and Angela Walker beat Kathleen Percegona and Maria Aveiga, 6-2.

"We have been struggling winning the doubles point and it was huge getting that point to get us some momentum for singles," Maloney said.

In singles play, Cvetkovic beat Valdez, 6-2, 1-0. Arkhipov beat Lina Sachica, 6-2, 6-3 while Walker earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Eve Daniels. Madison Fenske knocked off Maria Aveiga, 6-4, 6-2.

Idaho State is back in action Feb. 15 at Eastern Washington.
