OGDEN, Utah- No. 2 Weber State rallied past Idaho State by scoring a touchdown with two minutes left in the game to earn a 20-15 victory on Saturday afternoon at Stewart Stadium.
After trailing 14-6, Idaho State scored nine fourth quarter points to take a 15-14 lead with 5:25 left in the game.
Idaho State's touchdown came with 10:58 left in the game when
Tyler Vander Waal found
Christian Fredrickson open in the end zone on a 10-yard reception. The scoring drive went 78 yards and took 3:19 off the clock.
The Bengals later went 85 yards and took the 15-14 lead on a
Kevin Ryan 23-yard field goal with 5:25 remaining in the game.
Weber State then drove 76 yards and scored the winning touchdown with two minutes left to earn the 20-15 victory.
In a tightly contested first half, Idaho State trailed 7-3 at the break. The Bengal defense forced two Weber State turnovers and had a fourth down stop.
Idaho State led 3-0 with 11:16 left in the second quarter after a
Kevin Ryan 35-yard field goal. The score was set up after
Jayden Dawson recovered a fumble.
The Wildcats countered with a touchdown on the ensuing possession that went five plays and 80 yards to lead 7-3 with 3:26 left in the first half.
Weber State had a chance to take 10-3 lead going into halftime but a 29-yard field goal was wide left.
On Idaho State's opening possession of the third quarter the team drove 65 yards on 12 plays and Ryan connected on a 28-yard field goal to cut the WSU lead to 7-6 with 9:51 left in the quarter.
Idaho State had 381 yards of total offense while the Wildcats had 387.
Tyler Vander Waal was 19-41 with one touchdown and one interception. He threw for 268 yards.
Malakai Rango rushed for 52 yards on 14 carries.
Tanner Conner caught six passes for 98 yards and
Xavier Guillory had seven receptions for 66 yards. Fredrickson caught five passes for 61 yards and a touchdown and
Nate Shubert had a career-high 57 yards receiving.
Dawson led the defense with a season-high 10 tackles and a fumble recovery.
Connor Wills had seven tackles.
