POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team split their double header at Portland State, losing 8-0 in five innings in game 1 and winning 3-2 (9 innings) in game 2 to break a 13 game skid.
"Wins always feel nice," said Head Coach Cristal Brown. "We need to keep getting tougher, carry it over and build on it."
In game 1, the Bengals were held to two hits and committed two errors in the field. PSU scored six runs in the second inning and two in the fourth to put the game away.
In game 2, Portland State scored a run in the second inning and the game remained 1-0 until the seventh inning when Angelica Cano hit a two-out homer over the left field fence to tie the game at one.
The Bengals and Vikings held each other scoreless in the 8th. In the top of the ninth the Bengals got runners on first and second before Rheanne Lewis hit a go-ahead single into center field, breaking the tie and giving the Bengals a 2-1 lead. Emma Bordenkecher followed with another RBI single earning the Bengals a 3-1 lead at the end of Top 9. Â
The Bengals held off the Portland State attack in the bottom of the 9th to secure the first ISU win in 13 games.
Mailee Newman threw a complete 9 innings and allowed only 8 hits while walking one and allowing two runs.
The series concludes Saturday at 1 p.m. (MST) in Portland. Following Saturday's game, Idaho State hosts Boise State on April 21 at 3 p.m.
