Bengals Compete in Heptathlon and Decathlon at BYU Robison Invitational

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State track and field multi-event athletes competed Wednesday, April 21 and Thursday, April 22 in the heptathlon and decathlon in the first two days of the BYU Robison Invitational.
 
Ashley Vanvleet-Sturgis and Brianna VanVleet topped the podium for the Bengals placing first with 5133 points and third with 4798 points, respectively. Freshman Kaitlyn Neff scored 3857 in her first heptathlon.
 
Ethan Garrett and Cade Ricks competed in the decathlon scoring 5527 points and 5357 points, respectively. This is both Garrett and Ricks first year competing in the multi-events and this meet was ricks first decathlon.
 
Day One
 
The first day started out with the women's 100m Hurdles. Vanvleet-Sturgis came in first out of 15.13, earning 825 points. Neff earned 799 points in the hurdles.
 
The men started the day with the 100m dash. Garrett earned 665 points in this event running a new personal best of 11.93 and Ricks earned 522 points.
 
Moving on, the women finished strong in the high jump. Vanvleet-Sturgis walked away with 806 points jumping 1.66m (5' 5.25"). VanVleet earned 771 jumping 1.63m (5' 4.25"). Neff rounded out the group earning 632 jumping 1.51m (4' 11.5").
 
In the Men's long jump Garrett jumped 6.15m (20' 2.5") and got 619 points. Ricks followed jumping 5.63m (18' 5.75") and earned 508 points.
 
The Bengals had a strong day in the shot put, Vanvleet-Sturgis and VanVleet finished in the top three throwing 11.30m (37' 1") for 615 points and 11.20m (36' 9") for 608, respectively. Neff earned 365 points in her first shot put competition.
 
Garrett walked away with 406 points in the shot put and Ricks finished with 397.
 
The last event for the women on day one of the heptathlon was the 200m dash. Vanvleet-Sturgis ran a 25.54, this time gave her 838 points and a new personal record. VanVleet ran a 26.08, earning 790 points. Neff finished with 790 points running a time of 27.83.
 
The high jump was a strong event for Garrett, he jumped 1.93m (6' 4") which earned 740 points. Ricks earned 585 points from the high jump.
 
The last event for the men was the 400m. Garrett finished the race earning 689 points and Ricks earned 615.
           
At the end of day one Vanvleet-Sturgis was in first, VanVleet was in third, and Neff was in Eleventh in the heptathlon. On the men's side Garrett ended day one in tenth place and Ricks was in twelfth for the decathlon.  
 
Day Two
 
The men started off Thursday's competition with the 110m hurdles. Garrett ran 15.7, this time earned him 759 points and is a new personal best. Ricks ran a 17.23, earning 600 points.
 
Long jump was first for the women. VanVleet jumped furthest for the Bengals, jumping 5.50m (18' 0.5") for 700 points. Vanvleet-Sturgis followed with a jump of 5.44m (17' 10.35") for 683. Neff jumped 4.82m (15' 9.75"} earning 511 points.
 
In the discus, Ricks earned 495 and Garrett followed with 343.
 
Vanvleet-Sturgis finished the javelin with 561 points throwing 34.44m (113'). VanVleet earned 480 points and Neff ended with 359 points.
 
Ricks had a great day in the pole vault, he jumped 4.46m (14' 7.5") a new personal best for 748 points. Garrett earned 446 points from this event and jumped 3.36m (11' .25") which is a new personal best for Garrett.
 
Javelin was next for the men, Ricks threw 36.79m (120' 8.5") and earned 396 points. Garrett followed throwing 35.05m (115') for 371 points.
 
The final event in the heptathlon was the 800m. Vanvleet-Sturgis came in first for the Bengals running a time of 2:21.82 for 799 points. VanVleet finished at 2:35.61 for 624 points and Neff at 2:42.30 for 547 points.
 
In the decathlon, the final event was the 1500m run. Ricks finished with a time of 5:04.24 and 536 points. Garrett finished at 5:12.69 and earned 489 points this is a new personal best for him.
