POCATELLO, Idaho – While Pocatello was dealing with a spring snowstorm, the Idaho State Bengal softball team traveled across the state to take on the Boise State Broncos. The two teams battled back and forth before BSU was able to pull away in the 6th and earn the 4-2 win over the Bengals.
"We played a good ball game today," said Head Coach Cristal Brown. "[We] lost a couple of opportunities early when we left too many runs on but [I'm] pleased overall with the level of play."
The Broncos got on the board first in the 2nd with a two-run home run to take the 2-0 lead.
The two teams traded a scoreless 3rd before the Bengals came up to the plate in the top of the fourth.
Amber Arreola got on base first with a walk. Skyler Sethman then hit fly that advanced Arreola. After a passed ball, Arreola was on third with only one out. After a bunt single by Kaylee Butterworth, the Bengals had two on. Isabel Cargill brought in Arreola while grounding out to third then Rheanne Lewis hit a perfect pop over the second baseman's head and landed in the dead zone of shallow center field. Butterworth scored and the Bengals tied the game 2-2.
The two teams would battle back and forth, trading outs, until, in the bottom of the sixth, the Broncos were able to score two more runs. Unable to respond in the seventh, the game ended with the BSU 4-2 victory.
Emma McMurray pitched the complete game for the Bengals, only giving up 6 hits and striking out two BSU players.
The Bengals had three hits and two runs scored.
The team is back at it next week as they head south to Provo to face the BYU Cougars.
