Charlie Ragle has announced the programs defensive staff.
As previously announced,
Tim Schaffner will serve as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.. Vince Amey will serve as the defensive ends coach. DaVonte' Neal will coach the corners, JB Hall the safeties, and
Byron Hout the defensive tackles.
Amey comes to Idaho State after spending 2020 as the defensive line coach with the XFL's Los Angeles Wildcats. In 2019 he coached the defensive line for the AAF's San Diego Fleet under Mike Martz.
Amey spent five years at the University of Arizona. From 2012-15 he was the assistant strength coach. In 2015 he served as the defensive analyst and from 2016-17 he was the defensive line coach. Amey also spent time coaching the defensive line at various high schools in Arizona from 2004-11. In 2011 he helped lead Chaparral to a state championship. Amey played defensive tackle at Arizona State from 1994-98. During his played career he started at defensive tackle in the 1997 Rose Bowl vs. Ohio State.
Hall came to Idaho State in 2019. He has coached the safeties since his arrival at Idaho State. He also served as the assistant special teams coordinator prior to this season. Hall coached the cornerbacks at Sacramento State in 2018 and from 2015-18 he coached the corners at Montana. He served as the defensive graduate assistant at Colorado from 2013-15. Hall played at Adams State from 2010-12.
Hout enters his second year at Idaho State. After serving as the defensive line coach in 2021, he will coach the defensive tackles this season. Prior to Idaho State Hout spent five years at Montana State coaching the defensive line. During his time at Idaho State the Bobcats advanced to the FCS Semi-finals in 2019 and the defense ranked 18
th in rushing defense.
Neal comes to Idaho State after spending time as an assistant coach at Chaparral and Papago Pumas High Schools. Neal played at Notre Dame from 2012-13 and at the University of Arizona from 2014-16.
