Bengals Split Day 2 at UTEP

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team split day 2 of the UTEP Invitational on Friday, winning 11-0 in five innings over Abilene Christian and losing to Creighton 6-2.

"Emma McMurray threw a fantastic game against ACU," Idaho State coach Andrew Rich said. "She was in control the whole way and was able to work out of a couple tough spots which was great to see. Gelly Cano had a huge swing to drive one out of the yard and get us on the board first in that game. Rheanne Lewis had a great day at the plate and is doing an awesome job setting the table for the rest of the lineup. We're looking forward to closing this weekend out on a high note tomorrow morning."

In the win over Abilene Christian, Idaho State had 10 hits and committed no errors. Eight different Bengals had hits as Mailee Newman was 2-3 with two RBIs and Frankie Tago was 2-3 with an RBI and one run scored.

Isabella Hanson was 1-3 with a three-run homer and Angelica Cano was 1-2 with a homerun.

Emma McMurray went the distance, allowing three hits, striking out five and only walking two.

After two scoreless innings, the Bengals scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Rheanne Lewis led off with a walk and Cano followed with her homer over the right-center fence.

The Bengals opened the floodgates in the fourth inning with a nine-run inning. Hanson hit her three-run homer and Newman had a two-RBI single to left field to spark the inning.

In the loss to Creighton, Idaho State had five hits while the Blue Jays had 10.

ISU scored a run in the first inning, but  Creighton then scored three in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. The Bengals added a run in the seventh inning.

Lewis was 3-4 and scored two runs. Emma Montoya took the loss in the circle.

Idaho State closes out the Invitational on Saturday at 10 a.m. vs. Abilene Christian. The Bengals then play at Dixie State on February 17 at 12 p.m. before heading to Phoenix, Ariz., for the GCU Purple Classic.
