Bengals Split Day Two of Silicon Valley Classic

POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State softball continued the 2022 Silicon Valley Classic Saturday afternoon. The Bengals (12-12, 0-0 BSC) split a double header with Santa Clara University winning the first game 5-3 and dropping the second game 4-2.

Game One | ISU 5 – Santa Clara 3

Idaho State softball defeated the Santa Clara Broncos 5-3 Saturday afternoon in Santa Clara, California.

Mareena Ramirez picked up her second win of the season leading the Bengals in the circle over 5.1 innings.

The Broncos got on the board first, scoring their only runs of the game on a homerun in the bottom of the first.

The Bengals wasted no tie responding. In the top of the second, Piper Tago led off with a double, Skyler Sethman followed with a single. Coming up to bat, Brook Richards doubled down the left field line scoring two runs and tying the game at 2-2.

Ramirez followed it up with three consecutive strikeouts in the bottom of the second.

In the thirds, Frankie Tago drew a walk, she was followed by P. Tago who singled to left. Isabella Hanson reached on an error loading the bases.

Mailee Newman singled to left field brining home her first RBIs in nine games.

The Bengals headed to the bottom of the third up 4-2.

The fourth, fifth and sixth innings went back and forth with neither team able to put runs on the board and Ramirez continuing to deal in the circle.

The Bengals got some breathing room in the seventh when Morgan Hess hit an RBI single extending the Bengal advantage to 5-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, Haley Rainey came in as relief for the Bengals. The Bengal defense held strong as the Broncos went three up and three down and the Bengals ended the game with the 5-3 victory.

F. Tago went two-for-two. Richards and P. Tago also had two hits.

Three Bengals hit doubles and the team finished with a .367 combined batting average.

Ramirez struck out a career-high eight Broncos and allowed six hits and three runs.
 

Game Two | Santa Clara 4 – ISU 2

The Idaho State Bengals fell to Santa Clara 4-2 in game two of its doubleheader.

The Broncos took the lead early in the third going up 1-0 on the Bengals. They added two more runs in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead.

Heading into the seventh, the Bengals had one more chance to come back. Idaho State loaded the bases loaded the bases off of Isabel Cargill, Richards and Rheanne Lewis hits. Angelica Cano singled to left field and the Bengals put two runs on the board cutting the deficit to 4-2.

P. Tago battled at the plate but eventually struck out ending the game with a 4-2 Santa Clara win.

Cargill finished the game, two-for-two. Cano led the team with two RBIs.

The Bengals recorded 11 hits in the game hitting a team .379 batting average. Seven different Bengals had hits in the loss.

Haley Rainey pitched 4.2 innings allowing six hits and four runs with two strikeouts.

Emma McMurray came in as relief striking out three Broncos in 1.1 innings pitched.

The Bengals conclude the 2022 Silicon Valley Classic tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM MT when they face off against UC Davis.
