Bengals Defeat Nevada, Split Day One of Libby Matson

POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State Softball split day one of the Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton, California. The Bengals opened the tournament with an extra-inning 4-0 victory over Nevada. Then, in game two of the day, the Bengals fell 6-0 to the Pacific Tigers.

Game One | ISU 4 – Nevada 0

The Bengals defeated the Nevada Wolfpack 4-0 Friday morning to open the 2022 Libby Matson Tournament.

Haley Rainey threw her first career shutout and held the Mountain West Conference squad to just three hits.

The game was a pitching battle with neither team able to break the stale mate as both pitchers controlled the game and forced extra innings with the score knotted at 0-0.

Heading into the final inning, Rainey had struck out seven batters and only allowed three hits off of the Nevada Squad.

Going into the 8th, Skyler Sethman was placed on second. Isabella Hanson grounded out allowing Sethman to advance to third. Brook Richards came up to bat and hit a single bringing home Sethman and breaking the eight-inning stalemate.

After the run scored, the floodgates opened. Rheanne Lewis reached on an error and Richards made it to third. Kaylee Butterworth singled to short scoring a Richards RBI. Gracie Smith reached after being hit by a pitch followed by Senior Frankie Tago hitting a two RBI Single to right.

The Bengals ended the half inning up 4-0 on Nevada.

As she had multiple times already, Rainey entered the circle and with a runner on second, forced Nevada to go three up three down, ending the game and securing the Bengal victory.

The Bengals had four hits with four RBIs. Rainey ended with seven strikeouts on 29 batters faced with three hits and zero walks allowed.

Game Two | Pacific 6 – ISU 0

The Bengals fell to the Pacific Tigers 6-0 Friday afternoon. The Tigers scored runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth to claim the victory.

The Bengals had four hits. Angelica Cano led the team going two-of-three.

Emma McMurray in five innings pitched allowed six runs on five hits. McMurray led both teams with nine strikeouts on 30 batters faced.
