Game 30: No. 10 Idaho State vs. No. 7 Portland State

BOISE, Idaho- The Idaho State men's basketball team heads into the Big Sky Conference tournament as the No. 10 seed and will play No. 7 seed Portland State on Wednesday, March 9 at 12 p.m.  The game will be televised on ESPN + and Jerry Miller and Brad Bugger will call the action live on KISU. 



The winner of Wednesday's game plays No. 2 SUU on Thursday. Portland State has won six of the last seven meetings vs. the Bengals with Idaho State's only win being 64-57 on Jan. 21, 2021 in Portland. 

After winning only three games in November, December and January the Bengals went 4-5 in the month of February. In those nine games, ISU had four players scoring in double figures led by Tarik Cool's 13.9 points. Liam Sorensen is scoring 11.6 points, Jared Rodriguez 11.8 and Malik Porter 11.1 points. The Bengals are scoring 70.7 point, shooting .457 percent from the field and .739 percent from the free throw line. The Bengals are out rebounding opponents 34-29. During February, Jared Rodriguez shot 44 percent from the three-point line, 47.5 percent from the field and averaged 5.4 rebounds. 

Bengals in the Big Sky Tournament 
The Bengals are 17-26 in the Big Sky Conference tournament. The win over NAU in 2020 as the No. 11 seed was the first tournament win since 2009. In 2008 and 2009 the Bengals hosted first round games in Pocatello and beat Montana 67-65 in 2008 and Northern Colorado 67-60 in 2009. The Bengals then lost in the semi-finals to Portland State both years, 72-61 in 2008 and 61-53 in 2009.

The last time ISU won the conference tournament was during the 1986-87 season. The
Bengals finished the regular season 5-9 in league and tied for fifth and won the tournament by beating Nevada 92-81 in the title game.

About Portland State 
Portand State is 12-16 and 10-10 in the Big Sky Conference. The Vikings score 73.5 points a game and opponents score 72.6 points. PSU shoots .430 percent from the field, .299 percent from the three-point line and .745 percent from the free throw line. They are being out rebounded 37.8-34.2. James Jean-Marie leads the team in scoring at 12.9 points and 8.9 rebounds. Khalid Thomas scores 12.4 points and averages 6.4 rebounds.
