Gallery: (4-19-2022) Softball Home vs Utah State
POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State softball fell 10-9 to Utah State Tuesday afternoon in Pocatello. The Bengals (19-21) scored nine runs on 11 hits with one error.
16 of the 19 runs were scored in the bottom of the third and top of the 4th between both teams.
The Bengals had an offensive explosion in the third. Angelica Cano had a two-run RBI to get the Bengals started. Mailee Newman then had a single allowing Cano to score.
With a 3-0 lead, Morgan Hess hammered a three-run homerun to extend the Bengal lead to 6-0.
Not to be outdone, Isabella Hanson followed it up with a homerun of her own to extend the lead to 7-0.
After two more Bengals reached, Cano in her second at bat of the inning singled to left brining home a run and giving the Bengals an 8-0 lead headed into the 4th.
The Aggies weren't done though, and in the top of the 4th, Utah State went on a run of their own to score eight runs and headed into the 5th, both teams were tied at 8-8.
The Bengals kept fighting, stranding Utah State players on base to keep the stalemate alive. The Aggies were able to break the tie in the sixth though and take a 10-8 lead into the bottom of the sixth.
The Bengals were able to cut the lead to one after Hanson singled to center bringing home Hess.
Headed into the final inning the Aggies led the game 10-9, Haley Rainey in the circle stepped up and struck out three of the final four batters to send the game to the bottom.
The Bengals were able to get a runner on base in the bottom of the 7th but were unable to close the gap and Utah State came away with the 10-9 win.
Idaho State hit .324 on the game going 11-of-34 in the batters box.
With the next Big Sky series looming, the Bengals gave all five pitchers opportunities to throw in the game. Mareena Ramirez led with 3.2 innings pitched where she only allowed two hits and struck out three batters.
Rainey followed with two innings pitched allowing two runs on two hits and fanning four of the Aggie batters.
On Deck
The Bengals next head south this weekend to Cedar City for a vital series with the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. Due to the possibility of inclement weather the series has been moved to Saturday, Sunday of next week.
