POCATELLO, Idaho- Idaho State Director of Athletics has announced the hiring of Sean Carter as the next head coach of the Bengal women's volleyball program.
"We were fortunate to have a robust pool of qualified candidates for this position, and Sean Carter emerged as the clear choice to revive the rich history of Idaho State Volleyball," Idaho State Director of Athletics Pauline Thiros said. "He is high energy, and known to be a very capable technician who will develop our returning student athletes at an elite level. He is a workhorse, tireless on the recruiting trail, and equally devoted to improving the experience of the kids already in our gym. He is the right partner to restore our program to a Big Sky Contender, and he will do it in the right way. I am very pleased to welcome Sean to Idaho State University."
Carter comes to Pocatello after spending the last eight years as the Associate Head Coach at Wichita State. Carter is the 11th head coach in program history.
"I would like to thank Pauline, President Satterlee, and the rest of the leadership team for the opportunity to lead the Idaho State women's volleyball program," Carter said. "My wife Chelsea and I really were made to feel at home while we were here. The community, university, and athletic department are a perfect fit for us. I am very thankful to coach Stuart for recruiting quality young women to the program and only hope to build on things that are already in place. I hope to bring an enthusiasm, passion, and desire for academic and competitive excellence to this university and community."
During Carter's time in Wichita the Shockers made three NCAA tournament appearances, one appearance in the NIVC, won two Missouri Valley Championships, and one American Athletic Conference Championship. In 2017, Wichita State was a Top 16 seed in NCAA Tournament.
Since 2017 he has been in charge of starting lineups, offensive scouting reports and in-game offensive adjustments. He has also overseen training setters, middles and first contacts.
Prior to his time at Wichita State he was the first assistant at The Masters College from 2012-2014. While there he coached the 2012 NAIA Freshman of the Year and a first-team All-American.
Carter is a graduate of the University of Arizona with a bachelors in psychology. He played on the Arizona Club team and competed in USAV Adult Nationals. He was a libero at CSU Northridge from 2006-08.
Carter added, "This sport has already given my wife and I so much and we take very seriously our role in developing young women who we hope will leave the university with all the skills to be successful in whatever they choose to do in life. The Big Sky has so many well respected programs and Head Coaches, I am looking forward to the opportunity and challenge of competing in such a competitive league. To Bengal Nation I know the team and our staff can't wait to meet all of you and will do everything in our power to give you something to #ROAR about this season. GO BENGALS!"
