Bengals Fall to Huskies 57-37 in Hawaii

POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State Bengals went toe-to-toe with the Washington Huskies Friday night with Washington pulling away in the fourth quarter to win the contest 57-37. Idaho State moves to 2-3 on the season with the loss in the first game of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown.

How it Happened
The game started slowly out the gate for both teams, but as will be seen for the remainder of the game, three-point shots made the difference.
In the first 10, Idaho State only hit three of nine field goals while the Huskies went two-of-12 from the field. Both the Huskies' field goals were three-pointers and with four free throws, Washington took a 10-6 lead into the first break.
The Bengals' three-point woes continued in the 2nd quarter with the Orange and Black failing to hit a shoot from beyond the arc. The Huskies got hot in the quarter and shot 53.8 percent from the floor to outscore the Bengals 20-8 in the period and take a 30-14 lead into halftime.
The Bengals came out on fire in the third, with Maria Dias leading the charge. ISU shot 80 percent from the field on eight-of-10 shots and outscored the Huskies 17-12 in the period.
With time running out on the clock, Sophia Covello pitched the ball to Nika Lokica who drained the jumper as the clock ran out to cut the Husky lead to 42-31 with 10 to play.
In the fourth, the Huskies were able to hold their lead as the Bengals slow shooting continued. Maria Dias hit the Bengals lone three pointer of the game in the quarter.
The clock hit zero and the Huskies walked away with the 57-37 win over the Bengals.
For the second game in a row, the Bengals had 20+ turnovers. Against the Huskies the Bengals' 22 turnovers led to 22 points for Washington.

Notes
  • Maria Dias had a DI career-high 15 points on seven-of-12 shooting.
  • The Bengals finished with just a -1 rebound margin against a Washington Husky team who averaged +23 headed into the game.
  • The Bengals only made it to the free throw line for six attempts, a season's low.
  • The Bengals shot 40 percent from the floor compared to the Huskies 35.8, but couldn't make up the ground from behind the three-point line
  • The Bengal defense held the Huskies to just two second-chance points off of seven Washington offensive rebounds
